Asset Management
Taiyo was founded in 2001 to capitalize on the significant investment opportunities in the Japanese market by utilizing the strategic consulting, investment management, Japanese language and operational skills of the Founding Partners. While Taiyo continues to be excited about and deeply committed to opportunities in Japan, we also see opportunities to take our successful model from Japan to the rest of Asia. Taiyo currently invests in small to mid-cap public and private companies in Asia.
Taiyo Helps Companies Maximize Their Firm Value Taiyo has been called a "Kibishii yujin" (tough friend), by our portfolio companies. We engage with senior management of our portfolio companies to protect, unlock, and create long-term value in three basic areas: Reputation, Financial, and Business. We help companies in areas such as market communication, financial strategy, management strategy, M&A, divestiture, and corporate governance. Our team works to earn the trust of management and to provide them with ideas, analysis, and tools that will enhance their decision making and give them increased confidence to make bold decisions. Our style blends the disciplines from Investment Banking, Consulting, Private Equity and Investment Management. We believe that an active, friendly, hands-on engagement strategy is the best way to protect, unlock, and create long-term value for both public and private companies.
Taiyo is a pioneer in engagement investing in Japan and offers employees the opportunity to utilize and develop a wide range of skills: - Analysis: company and industry research - Stock Selection: assist in identifying and analyzing new portfolio companies - Portfolio Management: all investment team members play a significant role in portfolio decision making - M&A: assist portfolio companies by sourcing and evaluating deals - Consulting: identify ways for companies to increase value and then advise companies on why and how they should make changes. - Relationship Skills: investment team members must be able to earn the trust and respect of portfolio company management. - Private Equity: source, conduct due diligence and execute deals. Taiyo has close to 20 investment professionals in addition to the Founding Partners. Roughly half of these professionals are native to the Asian countries they cover and the rest have all spent extensive time working in Asia and speak the local language fluently. Our professionals have a wide range of Investment Banking, Consulting, Private Equity, and Equity Research experience which enables Taiyo to protect, unlock, and create value within our portfolio companies. All of our investment professionals spend a significant amount of time in Asia.
Taiyo is looking for highly qualified professionals with at least 3 years of experience working in the Japanese market. Successful Taiyo team members have come from diverse backgrounds: investment banking, consulting, private equity, strategic marketing, portfolio management, equity research, and industry. Taiyo is a very flat organization and we expect MBA interns and full-time candidates to be able to contribute from Day 1. Our strategy requires rigorous financial analysis skills, creativity to find and implement value creation ideas for our portfolio companies, and a positive attitude with the potential to build positive relationships with Taiyo team members and portfolio company management. Taiyo is separated into two groups: - The Portfolio Management (PM) team is responsible for sourcing new investment ideas and recommending opportunistic portfolio rebalancing to the investment committee. - The Engagement Team is responsible for working with portfolio company management to identify and implement ways to increase firm value through interaction with many levels of portfolio company management. Members of both teams use proprietary research methods, conduct industry research including intense fundamental analysis of public and private investment candidates, meet with management, and develop presentations to give to portfolio companies. Interns do a variety of associate level work for both teams. Internships require a minimum commitment of 4-8 weeks.
